(Interactive whiteboards or electronic whiteboards facilitate screen casting. Interactive education provides IWB and screencast tools to the UK education market.)

A Screencast or video screen capture is a movie of recorded activities generated by a user of a computer. It may include audio narration also. To develop a screencast you will have to use a special software known as the screencast software which can instantly create a screencast by recording your activities on your computer. The screencast software can produce files in .exe, .avi, .wmv, .swf etc formats. A screencast produced by a video camera is not of high quality and clarity. So it should not be used to produce a screencast.

Don't confuse a screencast with a screenshot. A screenshot is a still picture of a computer screen whereas a screencast is a movie of still or not still pictures. How you can tell your friend in America, to install a particular software on his computer. One way is through screencasting. Install the software on your computer and record all the activities you did while installing it through your screencast software. Then email the file generated by your software to your friend. Your friend will execute the file on his computer and then learn the method of installation very easily.

Software developers use screencasting as presentation tool to describe features of there projects to a third party. Screencasting is also extensively used as a teaching tool, esp to teach computer. It is used by instructors to deliver high quality course material at a relatively low cost to geographically distributed learners. And as such is an effective e learning authoring tool.
